Love God

Loving God is the foundational calling of human existence and the ultimate purpose for which we were created. In Matthew 22:37-38, when asked to identify the single most important instruction in Scripture, Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” This total devotion is not an invention of the New Testament; it builds directly upon the ancient Hebrew creed found in Deuteronomy 6:5. Biblical love for God engages every dimension of human life—our emotions, our inner spiritual life, and our intellectual faculties—demanding an undivided loyalty that places Him above all competing priorities and desires.

Crucially, Scripture reveals that our love for God is not something we manufacture in our own strength, but a personal response to His prior initiative. As 1 John 4:19 succinctly states, “We love because he first loved us.” The depth of God’s love was decisively demonstrated through the sacrifice of His Son, giving believers both the reason and the capacity to love Him in return. Loving God means recognizing His sovereignty, offering Him genuine praise, and seeking intimacy with Him through regular prayer and reflection on His character. It transforms God from a distant concept into the primary object of our deepest affection and devotion.

Finally, the Bible makes clear that genuine love for God is proved through tangible obedience rather than mere emotion or sentimentality. Jesus explicitly connected these two concepts in John 14:15 when He said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” This principle is echoed in 1 John 5:3, which notes that “this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” Loving God daily involves aligning our choices, motives, and actions with His revealed truth, trusting that His commands are designed for our good and His glory. Far from being a rigid obligation, practical obedience is the natural expression of a heart that truly honors, trusts, and loves its Creator.
