16 Essential Bible verses on how we should Serve and Obey God
Old Testament Foundation
“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.” (Deuteronomy 10:12–13)
“So fear the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly. Serve the LORD alone. But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve… But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14–15)
“Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:4)
“Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
Obedience Over Ritual
“What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice?… Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)
New Testament Instruction
“If you love me, obey my commandments.” (John 14:15)
“All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” (John 14:23–24)

Undivided Allegiance

“Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.” (Romans 6:16)
Service in Daily Life
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (Romans 12:1–2)
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” (Colossians 3:23–24)
“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10–11)
Additional Passages
“But be very careful to obey all the commands and the instructions that Moses gave to you. Love the LORD your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold firmly to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” (Joshua 22:5)
“If you carefully obey the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul,” (Deuteronomy 11:13)
